Tekakwitha: she who bumps into things
Ingrid Peritz looks at this weekend’s canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha; I’m fascinated to know that “Tekakwitha” is Mohawk for “she who bumps into things” because Kateri lost most of her vision to smallpox as a child.

I did wonder if she might not have been left somewhere to die – I don’t mean to slam native culture at the time, which I don’t know much about, but it seems possible they might not have had the resources to support people with serious disabilities.
