1812 to be commemorated in a renaming
The Harper government has ordained the renaming of a major federal building on lower McGill to recall the war of 1812, one of their weirder obsessions. Usually simply called the édifice des douanes or the customs building, it will now be called the Dominique Ducharme building after a soldier in that war.

I’m pretty tired of this whole “War of 1812″ thing, especially since I tend to see it as a war between the British and the U.S. more than a war between Canada and the U.S. (Canada as we know it didn’t even exist then.)

I know. I occasionally consult the Environment Canada weather page and it’s bizarre to see three promotional banners at the bottom, one of which is for the War of 1812. WTF.
