Copenhagen ends world’s first city bike service
Copenhagen, which started the world’s first public bike-sharing system, has decided to shut it down rather than undertake the expense of replacing its 17-year-old fleet of bikes. Some background on their system from Wikipedia, which hasn’t yet integrated the news that the system is coming to an end.

The Copenhagen Post is calling it a delay. Also surprised to hear that it has just 1,000 bikes — more than 4,000 fewer than Montreal.

The system isn’t very good. When I was there, it was impossible to find a bike and the whole system seemed to be centred around the touristy parts of the city. I was told by a local that their theft prevention mechanism was simply to make the bikes so useless and unrideable that nobody would ever want one for themselves.
We ended up just stealing bikes which, in a city with more bikes than people, is actually pretty easy and not frowned upon so long as the bike isn’t locked (they call them ghost bikes)
