Who will head Union Montreal after Gérald Tremblay?
François Cardinal juggles names and faces wondering who will replace Gérald Tremblay at the helm of Union Montreal.
One option he doesn’t mention: maybe the party should fold. Municipal parties don’t have long lives. Union isn’t an old party – it came into existence in 2001. Jean Drapeau’s Civic Party, which for a time felt like a monolith in the city, lasted from 1960 to 1994.
Depending how the Charbonneau Commission pans out, and if it’s proven that Union Montreal glommed onto percentages of contracts, maybe it should be disbanded.

Maybe? You think? They should be pilloried, all of them. Scumbags.

Oversight was pretty weak but there’s still a lot of solid, honest people in that party.

Oversight was weak? That’s a, um, diplomatic way of phrasing it. And while there are bound to be a few decent people it is true that the fish rots from the head.

If there are honest councillors under the Union banner, let them create another party with rule 1 being more transparent funding. They would be wise to do this anyway, as their party adherence is tainted now even if they’re pure as the driven snow personally.

I followed the link and saw who might have a shot at replacing Tremblay. I was surprised that Michael Applebaum from CDN-NDG, wasn’t on the list, and neither was his sidekick Marvin Rotrand. I guess it shows how little I know about Montreal politics.

We’ve discussed that here before and the conclusion was pretty much unanimous: no anglo has a reasonable shot at being elected mayor of Montreal.

That’s not my conclusion. An anglo has a legit chance in a multi-candidate field. You just need to squeak by in a three or fourway split. It happened not long ago in Lachine with Mayor William McCulloch who beat two francos to become mayor about a dozen years back. Tommy Carcetti too.

@ Kate I disagree, a non french origin candidate does have a chance.A guy like John Parasella, who I wouldn’t vote for, could tap into that same sad Tremblay Liberal infrastructure and win. Harel is hoping that the PQ “family”( P.Q.,B.Q.,FTQ,CSN,CSQ,MEMO,Radio Canada Quebec City Bureau, Tele Quebec,Union des Artistes ) can put her over the top, but that family is moving out of here as fast as they can. Personally I am going to support a guy who was raised in an orphanage in Chicoutimi, Richard Bergeron.
