I’ve never seen this in Montréal, but on a visit to Toronto a few years ago we were on the subway platform waiting for the very last train of the night, and as we were waiting the platform gradually became overrun with mice. I don’t know how they knew the subway was about to close down for the night, but it was as if someone flipped a switch and told them it was safe to come out. I counted about 35 mice before the train arrived, and I bet more emerged after it left.

Part of the reason Toronto’s system has tons of mice is that portions of the track are above-ground.
