Big changes at the STM’s Youville shops
Radio-Canada has some video and notes about big changes being made at the STM’s Youville shops so they can maintain the new Azur trains, but there’s some odd stuff in there. The shops were not built in 1963 where the blue and orange metro lines cross. Here’s a photo of the shops in 1919, for starters, and 1963 predates the metro completely, let alone the blue line, which opened in the 1980s. The Youville shops are located east of Saint-Laurent and north of Crémazie.

Youville used to be the STM’s main garage and shops so it was updated in 1963 for the Metro opening in 1966. It is much closer to Cremazie and the orange line than the blue, which has a sperate long tunnel leading to it.

Oh and here is a little paper written by the STM on the history of Youville: http://www.stcum.qc.ca/en-bref/histoire_youville.pdf

Nice historical paper. I’m amazed they still have the stcum.qc.ca domain registered.

That’s an interesting paper. It includes the answer to a question I’ve vaguely wondered about: why that corner of town was called Youville, when it’s so far from Place d’Youville downtown. It was simply because someone thought it sounded classier to call the nearby post office Youville rather than Bougie!
