Question about a strange vehicle
I saw a vehicle yesterday that made me curious. It looked like a regular, rather large dark blue SUV, but what made me notice it was that I’d heard a siren and looked around, and this vehicle suddenly turned on red and blue flashers not on the roof but kind of hidden behind the front grille. This was on Liège, not a major street, although not far from Crémazie. It zipped past the other traffic and was gone before I saw anything else.
Do our cops have stealth vehicles of this kind? I realize I assumed it was illegal for non-cop vehicles to have sirens and red-blue flashers, but I don’t know the letter of the law.

Not sure about SUV’s, but they do have stealth police cars:

Maybe this?

Um… weird, that link does not go where I expected. Try this instead…

Matt H, I know about those and have seen them, but Philippe’s second link is closer to what I saw. I wonder what makes the Mounties turn on the sirens in the city.

Weird, Philippe’s second link sends me to a flickr page of “London UK Emperors Gate Victorian interior”.
Anyway, the OPP also has something like what you described:

They’re used to escort visiting political VIPs. Not too many of those around in Montreal though.

I took an insomniatic stroll around Cedar, Pine and Dr. Penfield the other night. It was shocked to discover that almost all of the diplomatic buildings are closed and/or for sale. How times have changed.

There are a few more police services active in Montreal besides the SQ, SPVM and RCMP. One can frequently see CN police around Victoria bridge, and I’d imagine at other CN sites on and off island. I also once saw military police writing tickets for traffic violations (!) near the Longue-Pointe garrison.

And one hears about CP police giving out tickets when people cross the tracks at Van Horne. But the vehicle I saw was not near any train tracks when it turned on its siren.

I once got a ticket from a CP Police officer. Something like 400$ for crossing through the yards. He also tried to tell me to go back the way I came, but I refused and went on my way. I mean, what was he going to do? Give me ANOTHER ticket for the same reason?

I think anyone can put on lights, if I remember correctly. What is forbidden is that exact colours that the police use. And of course going through lights, stop signs, etc.
Also, if you see a policeman turn on their lights to go through a light or stop sign and then turn them off, that you should press at the Commission, that’s not allowed. If it’s an emergency, they can use them, but just because they don’t want to wait like the rest of the citizens… verbotten.
