Upcoming student actions and a bad headline
Typical of the Gazette to post a piece about upcoming student actions under the inflammatory headline 'Prevent the return to class'. La Presse considers it more from the angle of whether resuming a term and finishing it in a month is going to work.
According to documents La Presse got via access to information, 48 cops were hurt in the period of demonstrations from February to May. At the same time, 111 complaints against the police were lodged.

“The nightly student demonstrations that brought parts of downtown Montreal to a standstill…”
The only parts of downtown that were brought to a standstill, were the parts of it that were sitting in their single-occupant SUVs.
For the Gazette, these cars represent “downtown,” which goes a long way towards explaining the car obsession of the general public: our news sources are stage-managed by car companies.

Did you see the website they linked to? It says “On August 10th Prevent a Return to Class” in 72 point type. I guess that site has probably been put together by some radical splinter group that doesn’t represent the majority of the students.

In the print version, which I receive, the headline is “Students to prevent class resumption” I don’t know why they don’t use the same for both versions.

Marc – it might just be a layout issue thing? One headline fits better on paper?
And Kate if that’s typical of the Gazette, it’s typicaller of the students to string those words together in the first place!

It’s a question of emphasis, as you know full well.

As much as I dislike bill 78, I don’t think it’s right for people to prevent others from attaining their education goals and forcing others to lose a half year to a year of their life.
I wonder if this has increased the number of students applying out of province…. who may end up staying there, leaving their tax money there, their future, etc.
