Metro outages blamed on computer glitch
As Ian noted in comments Wednesday, the afternoon outages that afflicted the whole metro system except the yellow line have been blamed on a computer problem.
Used to be “a computer problem” was an all-purpose general handwave, but now most of us use computers all the time and would enjoy knowing more. Did someone delete a bunch of files by mistake or move them to the wrong directory? Did someone trip over a cable? Disk crash? Coffee displacement crisis??

Technology is the modern version of magick and hackers are the wizards.

Perhaps the servers over-heated?

I could believe that. They’re stingy with their AC, those guys at the STM.

My theory is that something like this happened: http://bit.ly/MNCpbD

William, I made an “any key” joke just yesterday but the recipient didn’t get it.

Maybe because we are old and computers haven’t asked for “any key” to be pressed in a generation :S

No? I made the joke because I’ve recently been participating in a study that was partly on a computer screen, and various messages actually said “press any key to continue”.
