  We’ve come the full circle from Quebec wanting to separate to Western Canada wanting to kick us out to Canada wishing it was as cool as Quebec.

  If the students want a big victory, they would add the dismantling of Quebec’s discriminatory language laws such as Bill 101 to their list of causes. That’s something that not only the great majority of Queb- um…Montrealers could rally behind, but also the ROC.

  It’s interesting to hear and read all the comments from those claiming that an ‘unjust’ law like Bill 78 should not be obeyed because it is immoral. The same people who tell us to obey Bill 101 because it is the law…..

  What a lame-ass attempt to connect bill 78 and 101. (and may i add, gee, i didn’t see that coming).

  One law is meant to protect the only french jurisdiction in north america (you’re not happy, you got a whole english/spanish speaking continent to explore).

  The other law takes away our right to protest, including your own right to protest bill 101, (assuming youre the type that stands up for things)

  Raoul, that’s a look at those laws through your own personal lens. It’s propaganda. Anyone on the other side could easily summarize both laws in equally flip and biased ways. It doesn’t advance the dialogue.

  and the way i see bill 101 is this: the only people who feel “oppressed” are the ones who refuse to pick up the native language. And it continues to baffle me why a third of anglos i know complain so much about french but dont move away. Why? im betting it’s because it’s cheap here. None of them could have the same lifestyle outside the province. Seems plenty of people enjoy the economics here but they dont care much for the people. the culture or the politics.

  You dont have the same perspective on language and culture when your family is equal parts french, english and south american. But everybody in my family is happy where they’ve chosen to live and they never whine like the people i know here.

  “If you don’t like it go to Russia” is not really a good defense of undemocratic laws. One could argue the same about bill78 – if you want to demonstrate all the time, you can just go to France or whatever.

  What if we had a law that said that women weren’t allowed to work. And then I came along and said, well, you can work in the ROC, so just go there?

  @Raoul – I’m unilingual anglo, most of the people I know here are Anglo. I don’t know anyone who gives a damn about Bill 101. The worst I have heard are people complaining that “all their friends moved away” shortly after it was implemented. Personally, I could care less. I have no problems at all communicating in my little Anglo universe between Atwater and University. I actually have less trouble communicating in English here than I would in Miami or San Antonio or even New York.

  When in Rome…im just saying, an anglo can live anywhere in north america, how many french people feel comfortable living anywhere else? its not unreasonable to keep quebec french. and for those who dont care about 101, props, cuz i lived in TO 10 years and i dont care either.

  And none of this has anything to do with 78

  I don’t think 101 or 78 are unreasonable.
  I wish I didn’t get fined because the LED display on my office printer says “ready” but it’s the price I pay to live in peace with those whose opinions differ from mine.

  I agree getting a fine for equipment that you didnt manufacture/program yourself is a bitch. And i would contest it too.

  But considering how many businesses ive observed using pirated software, they’re lucky that’s all they get busted for :-/

  Why thank you qatzelok! You know, I take a lot of abuse for my lifestyle choice (especially from my French wife) but it’s nice to know I have your support. I hope you will consider marching with us during the Anglo Pride parade. Also, won’t you come down to the Anglo Village (St Catherine between Guy and University) and support some of our fine shops and restaurants?

  @ Bill Binns, I to have a confession to make, I was a unilingual anglo until I was 25.Then I went to U de M and had ” noyade linguistic”ever since I ‘ve appreciated living here a hell of a lot more.Before that I had a visceral reaction to a lot of the political noise here ,I don”t anymore.I respect your lifestyle choice but man you do not know what your missing!

  @Jack – I am not proud of the fact that I’m unilingual, it’s just my current situation. I absolutely think that if I stay here, I should learn French. I have always been impressed with how perfectly bilingual Montreal natives are and agree that those that are unilingual here are missing out.
