Quebec nixes tanning for under-18s
Quebec is making tanning salons illegal for under-18s. I find this so bizarre – I’ve always pictured them as the desperate resort of the unattractively aging. Are there really teenagers lining up to use them?

It’s the poor mans tropical vacation and the rich man’s spray on tan.
Funny enough, when I think of artificial tans, my thought go to something like this:

Oh man, Kate, remind yourself never to watch “Toddlers & Tiaras.”

I haven’t seen statistics, but I bet that teenage girls are the primary users of tanning salons here. When my 22-year-old slave-to-fashion stepdaughter was a teenager, she and her friends considered tanning salons mandatory, like having a cellphone, going to the hairdresser, or buying jeans from Parasuco.

Whoops, I didn’t read the Presse article far enough to see the stats at the bottom, which seem low to me, but maybe my view is distorted by my stepdaughter’s social circle, where literally all her friends went to the tanning salon at least once a month except during summer.

How on earth do they afford cellphones, Parasuco jeans and trips to the tanning salon??

They get after-school jobs, if they want to make money legitimately. Unfortunately not all of them want to make money legitimately and they pursue other options (selling drugs, prostitution, stealing, etc.).

When you don’t have any rent or bills to pay and get minimum wage for a part-time job, you’re pretty rich!

Maybe it’s a good idea to force students to take undignified jobs that destroy their idealism and mental/physical health. This will prepare them for the cynical cubicle-slavery that awaits them in the “real” economy after they graduate. Forget the Plan Nord – the Plan Cubicle is just as destructive to those who work in them.

qatzelok, sometimes I wonder if you are joking when you write certain things. You make me chuckle.
Heavens knows I am stressed enough to know I need it!
Thanks!!!! :)
