Heat wave: final day
Saturday is expected to be the last day of the heat wave; the social services agency continues to monitor vulnerable people to make sure the heat isn’t killing them. The Journal looked at islands of heat in the city and emphasized that the social services declared a state of emergency, saying that ten deaths can already be blamed on the weather. The Gazette, via Global, attempted instead to encourage us to feel terribly hot on public transit.
It’s summer in Montreal, folks.

It was just that Thursday night which was so wacky. I emerged from the air conditioned Cinema du Parc after the 7 pm showing of the Woody Allen film to find Montreal even hotter than I’d left it. The sky to the south was alive with a massive storm cell, lit by almost constant lightning that I couldn’t hear. Park benches on the Main were hot, even in the dark…

Video of the heat lightning Thursday night. I watched it hang over Point St. Charles for about an hour. Was it ever weird seeing that much lightning with nary a peep of thunder.

The fact is, the heat wave is indeed newsworthy: Montreal isn’t known for having particularly hot summers, as evidenced by several summers of recent years, where we’d have a couple sunny days hitting about 24-26C, followed by (usually) overcast and/or rainy days. To my memory that’s been the disappointing trend in Montreal, so this stretch of sunny, truly warm/humid weeks has been surprising and welcome (even if uncomfortable at times).
