Archaeologists have not yet found any trace of the lost village of Hochelaga visited by Jacques Cartier in 1535. A trawl through Outremont’s parks this summer turned up 19th-century oddments but no native village.

The headline here could be “Coalition Montreal still exists!” The party has announced the candidacy of Jean Fortier for mayor. Fortier was executive committee chairman under Pierre Bourque.

This weekend’s marathon has been cancelled because we’re expecting high heat and humidity that day. Some of the shorter races will be run.

Metro has a history piece on Catherine Crolo, first manager of the Ferme St-Gabriel in the Point and friend of Marguerite Bourgeoys. Online dictionaries mostly don’t know the word métayer, let alone métayère, but it’s defined in the piece (in English we’d say sharecropper).

Valérie Plante is promising to buy the STM 300 new buses as her first major gesture if she’s elected mayor.

She going to also promise the $150K a year (or more) to get that bus actually on the road? Someone has to pay for the driver, maintenance, petrol, etc. In the end, the bus is a fixed cost and done for. It’s keeping it rolling that’s important.

Getting new buses might not mean more on the road but the STM could scrap or sell old and troublesome buses which would bring maintenance costs down and allow riders to have nicer and more comfortable buses.

A burned body was found after a car fire in St-Laurent Tuesday night.

Update: Police think it was probably a suicide.
