The Bixi season is expected to open April 15.

During the winter biking congress last month a writer from toronto did a comparison on Montreal and Toronto’s systems. They keep their BIXI open all year, and apparently it works decently well.

They get less snow than we do, but they get big snow storms often enough that the example could be followed. I wonder if it’ll be more worth it as our winter cycling network improves and winter cycling mode share rises.

A worker who fell and injured his leg on a Griffintown construction site Tuesday morning was rescued by the fire department’s “spiderman” team and taken to hospital. Metro queries whether 14 fire vehicles were really needed for this, but also reports that the fall was initially called in as much more serious.

It’s interesting how many different types of special teams the fire department has. When I worked in a brewery, we occasionally had to go inside the tanks to scrub them out. There was always the chance that the cover could close or it could be full of co2 which could cause the person inside to lose consciousness. If that happened, the other person working (there always had to be someone else in the brewery if you went in a tank) would have to specifically ask the 911 dispatcher for the “enclosed spaces rescue team” which was part of the fire department. Thankfully they never had to be called but I was always curious as to what kind of training and equipment they had for such a specific type of rescue operation.

Working in those tanks must have been scary. Losing consciousness is the least of your worries if the tank was full of CO2. Death would result quite quickly if somebody couldn’t get you out of there ASAP.

I didn’t find it scary, more uncomfortable than anything. The only reason there would have been co2 in a tank would is if it hadn’t been properly sanitized and aerated before going in which it would have (or it would have been completely disgusting). I think you’d notice the co2 pretty quickly because breathing that stuff in feels like death. The biggest concern really was the cover somehow closing or just passing out for whatever reason but it’s not something I ever really worried about.

Frederick Gingras, facing murder charges in two shootings in December, may go for a not criminally responsible defence. Although he’s only 21, this item says he has a long history of mental troubles.

A man charged in an older double murder may be declared a dangerous offender after pleading guilty to reduced charges. In 2008, Aaron Sealy brutally murdered his aunt and uncle and torched their house in Ahuntsic.

All the STM’s Azur trains are expected back in service by the end of the month. I’ve happened to catch a bunch of Azurs lately, and while they’re a pleasant ride, I’ve heard some strange noises from below the floor a few times, and hope it’s nothing serious.

The Journal claims that the STM’s promise to speed up metro elevator installations has no funding to back it up. Columnist Louis-Philippe Messier unleashes some snark on the leisurely progress of renovations at Berri-UQÀM.

A new study on the REM says it will mean higher fares, which could have the effect of pushing 150,000 commuters back into cars.

And Philippe Schnobb has not ruled out running again in the November election. I mean hey, why not? He did well out of running and losing last time…
