Points to the Journal de Montréal for catching an interview with Arthur Porter in a Bahamian newspaper, in which he says allegations of his mismanagement at the MUHC are spurious. There’s also a backgrounder. Porter is said to be dealing with a “self-diagnosed cancer” and, as I say, while I have sympathy for anyone dealing with this illness, his announcement comes at a very convenient moment for a man trying to wiggle out of controversy.

Kristian has had a look at the bedbug registry and finds that Lincoln Street downtown is ground zero for bug infestation reports here. He also examines rental board records to find that tenants can sometimes get money from landlords in reparation for infestations.
As a footnote, the Bedbug Registry is a project by world traveller Maciej Ceglowski, who has spent time in Montreal (and written about it amusingly) although he may be better known for Pinboard.

The Charbonneau commission has opened an inquiry into real estate deals undertaken by Michael Applebaum while he was mayor of NDG-CDN borough.
Later update: Applebaum says he is not under investigation although he did go and talk to the Commission and is prepared to do so again if they ask. He also says he didn’t do anything wrong while he was still mayor of CDN-NDG.

Clement it’s pretty much public knowledge and all over the net. http://www.vigile.net/How-estate-was-built-on-public and http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=caea2631-6c72-4f11-b757-93838796d40b and http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=bc089ed0-7ead-4b71-8dea-3759b6994058&k=50395&p=1 among other articles. She sued because she believed the Gazette article suggested that he house was built on public land, it isn’t. (Not that they aren’t using the land with the servitude for highway 440… bet you that doesn’t get built with under her government!) And they alleged that they paid off the man to say he lived on the land, which they deny, but admit they did give him $500. But there are so many improprieties with the whole case. And the land? Is it being used agriculturally or lying fallow? http://www2.publicationsduquebec.gouv.qc.ca/dynamicSearch/telecharge.php?type=2&file=/P_41_1/P41_1_A.html

A La Presse journo looked at outdoor rinks and found standards differed a lot among the 19 boroughs, some managing to offer clean smooth ice on the same day others pleaded mild weather was making it impossible.

Michael Applebaum has launched an integrity squad in the police department, giving them permission to scrutinize details of the city’s workings from top to bottom.

Ephraim
So who’s going to scrutinize the police department?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes has been a problem at least since ancient Rome.

I realize that. I always wonder if they are issued with tax forms for their parking, since it is legally a taxable benefit in Quebec.

William
Yes, that is a huge tax issue in this province, dagnabit. lol.

Anyone looking into Chateau Marois? You know, the house she sold. Part of the estate sits on land expropriated by the PQ for the extension of highway 440, but was unused because of the PQ moratorium on building highways (not to mention highway maintenance.) And part on land with alleged claims that some man lived in an unheated shack every second day, while living across the street from his second heated home, a short walk away?
