A young man who made and posted a video of himself taunting the police about his bad behaviour while driving gave away enough about himself that the Laval police were able to identify him and serve him $356 in fines and 9 demerit points.

Can’t say he didn’t ask for it.

Society is not tough enough on these types. He should have his right to drive taken away, for a time at least.

“We don’t like that anymore,” said Pilon. “So we are going to investigate any action like that.”
So, they used to like it?

    • Kate 23:55 on 2012/01/18 Permalink

Yes, I noticed that quote too. I imagine something was lost in translation.

    • Beeper 10:49 on 2012/01/19 Permalink

He says those words in the video which is also posted there to the right. I think he meant “we’re not going to tolerate that anymore.”

    • qatzelok 11:06 on 2012/01/19 Permalink

Pretty well the only way the police can catch this kind of driving is if the driver himself records it and posts it online.

    • Steph 11:32 on 2012/01/19 Permalink

In the video, !@ 1:20 the young man says “la j’vais avoir mes 8 points”. If he accepts the points I think he’s lost his drivers license again.

Holy crap does that kid ever sound and look like a character from Têtes à Claques! :)

I was just going to do an entry about the police mole who is alleged to have sold a list of informers to the Mafia for any amount between 6 and 7 figures, when the news that he has killed himself in a motel in Laval suddenly shows up. No charges were ever made against this man, as the story was only just coming into focus.

    • Beeper 10:50 on 2012/01/19 Permalink

I believe he was trying to sell them to Tony Mucci through his lawyer. Mucci smelled a police set-up and didn’t go for it.

Even though fares creep upward yearly, a study by QMI shows that transit in Montreal remains relatively affordable compared to other cities they looked at, but it’s a small pool (eight cities) and comparing Montreal to cities as big as London, Paris and New York (especially cities with a clear zone system) is a bit silly. Find numbers for other urban aggloms in the 3 million range and comparisons would make better sense.

I spent Christmas in San Francisco and was really impressed with their bus system. $2.00 gets you a ride on a large bus where everybody is sitting down, an electronic sign on every bus displaying the current and next stop and an electronic sign at every bus stop displaying the time until the next bus arrives and the time until the one after that.

For me, these things are the difference between buses being usable or not. I can’t imagine why San Francisco can provide this level of service for $2.00 and Montreal doesn’t even come close while charging 50% more.

In the last five years I have been fortunate enough to travel for extended periods to Sevilla,Madrid,Paris,Valencia, Barcelona and London. The constant is that we are really well served by our transit system. If you make a choice to live near a metro or high volume bus routes, Montreal has a first rate, inexpensive system. The odd thing when you say this at gathering people think your inebriated. How come?

La Presse’s François Cardinal ponders the option of abandoning the Train de l’Est and says it’s too late. Andy Riga has posted an infographic comparing that train project with the Train de l’Ouest.

He mentions the $200 million that might be “necessary” to rebuild the Mount Royal tunnel to accommodate oil-fueled trains. I guess it’s really important to Francois (and to Money) that this line NOT be electrified.

I wonder which “friend of the family” got the diesel fuel contract?

    • William 12:35 on 2012/01/18 Permalink

Meanwhile Le Devoir is reporting that Gaspesie wants $93.5 million for regional rail… no details regading how many people use it… I thought it might be to do with cargo, but no mention of that aspect in the article either. http://www.ledevoir.com/societe/actualites-en-societe/340508/une-voie-ferree-delabree-menacee-de-fermeture

Trains are much greener and less expensive than car-based mass transportation. So if our economy/environment is in any danger, it would seem like a wise investment. Insisting on diesel locomotives here in hydro-land seems very unwise.

The problem with organized crime as a form of governance is that you end up being run (ruined) by wise guys instead of by wisdom.

      @William
      Maybe a via rail connection?

    • Robert J 17:23 on 2012/01/18 Permalink

The Gaspesie deal is for freight. Via rail might follow but the population is so spread out out there that I can’t see it as being a viable alternative to busses.

    • ant6n 18:48 on 2012/01/18 Permalink

There are all sorts of trains to nowhere run by via, for example to Gaspé actually (link), or Churchill, Manitoba, or Sennetere/Jonquière (link)

    • William 07:46 on 2012/01/19 Permalink

Le sigh – I guess you guys didn’t read Le Devoir’s article before you commented.

The headline here says it cost $25,000 for removing the indignés from Victoria Square but the itemized list is mostly for the cleanup afterwards.

    • Bill Binns 16:28 on 2012/01/18 Permalink

The Police overtime alone must have been higher than that figure. I have never seen that many uniformed Montreal Police in one place as long as I have lived here.
