The promoter of condo developments on Île Charron has bought the government deal and now gets $15 million for a piece of land he bought from Quebec for $6 million in 2007. (How does that growth compare to the market average?) 20.6 new hectares will now be added to Îles de Boucherville park.

Winter illuminations are coming back to the Quartier des spectacles with a new interactive installation opening December 15. Place Émilie-Gamelin will also have an illuminated labyrinth this winter.

Maybe we had enough ruckus here last week discussing the Hampstead by-law about noise on Rosh Hashanah, but consider this National Post commentary on Quebec media responses to the story. While calling the media here sensationalist, the writer seems to be reaching for sensationalism himself, quoting only the most extreme examples of comments and responses.

In the mainstream press, on any given issue, you usually see 2 opinions presented that are, relative to each other, extreme. It seems that they think there are always 2 sides (never 3, or 4, or 5) to every story.

That’s because journalists are trained to actively search out an opposing view, no matter what the story is. Officially this is to supposed to create balance and fairness, but in practice it’s usually put in to add some dramatic tension to the story.

There’s a thread of medical news running through this morning’s stories. Chronic concerns about fixing overwhelmed emergency rooms (and some thoughts about people viewed as abusers of the system); 9000 names on the surgery waiting list at the CHUM; a union victory as privately employed workers are declared part of the union at Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital.

A threatened strike by St. Lawrence Seaway workers was held off at the last minute by a tentative deal reached overnight.

Most media this morning are giving some kind of nod to the new Cirque du Soleil show about Michael Jackson, so here it is. Most local outlets are running the CP story, which is usually an indication of a certain lack of enthusiasm; Metro was disappointed.

The Journal makes the discovery that the passage to Champ-de-Mars metro station is sketchy, a fact that’s been known at least since I was a punk, but the solution of “moving people along” sounds sadly predictable. You don’t sleep in a metro tunnel when you have somewhere better to go.

The weekend’s Journées de la culture are called a success despite the rather gloomy weather.

Gloomy weather was a great reason for me to go inside a museum (history of printing in the old Lovell’s building on St Nicholas) or a church (free organ and recorder concert at Notre-Dame de Bonsecours)

Here’s a bit of sad drama: Montreal-born scientist Ralph Steinman was one of the recipients of the recent Nobel prize in medicine, but he had died a few days before it was awarded and the committee didn’t know. The accolade was for his work on the immune system. The Nobel normally only goes to the living, but it sounds like an exception may be made in this case, which has no exact precedent in the prize’s history. It’s interesting that Steinman had cancer but extended his life with his own dendritic cell therapy. That’s science!
Later: The committee will be giving the award money to Steinman’s estate.

Well, isn’t part of the problem that when government sells or buys land, it’s already decided that they’ll buy or sell before making the deal, meaning the market prize shifts due to … err, lack of elasticity?

He made a completely riskless investment and made a fortune on it. he has been paid a market price appropriate for land which may be developed when in fact it cannot. Who else would have given him even the price he paid for it?

What an excellent deal this free marketeer got from the nanny state. I hope he uses some of his nine million in profits to fund business-friendly parties in the next provincial election.

A fine example of how money flows from the many to the rich and unprincipled. This could have been the plan all along, corruption?
