So the jeep in the Angrignon Park pond had nobody in it and wasn’t reported as stolen by its female owner. It was hauled out of the water Monday morning. The pond area is off limits to motor vehicles, too. Odd.

($5 says it was a stunt by a disgruntled ex.)

The CSN is demanding that Couche-Tard reopen the Jean-Talon/Iberville branch which was closed following the unionization of workers at the location.

What business does the CSN have with the chain if it’s not unionized? Starting to see why the owners want to keep it that way.

    • Kate 23:35 on 2011/09/19 Permalink

It was unionizing and that’s good enough for the CSN.

    • James 08:02 on 2011/09/20 Permalink

I think the logic is that it’s illegal to close a store because it is unionizing. I’m boycotting personally.

People Person – the whole point of organized labour is the mutual support of labourers that want to organize. Crazy, I know, but there it is.

The Mercier Bridge report from June says that the structure was decaying fast – that’s why one of the spans was abruptly closed earlier this summer. The transport minister (who didn’t have the portfolio at the time) says it “wasn’t about to fall down.” Radio-Canada’s report; OpenFile curates a selection of the rustier images.

The McCord Museum has launched a Montreal historical iPhone app based on Google maps – locations around downtown and Old Montreal can be matched with archival photos. Youtube promo. The museum has also launched a second app that’s a guide to its new permanent exhibition.

Wow! That first app rocks. Thanks for the tip.

      From the second app:

Edward Burtynsky’s Oil exhibit runs from Oct 6 to Jan 8, with a talk by the photographer opening night at 6:30 PM. Also, Manufactured Landscapes will be shown Oct 19, Nov 16 and Dec 21, all at 6:30 PM.

Zeke inquires into the affair of Georges Marciano’s art loans to the Museum of Fine Arts. The Tournesol polychrome was on display near city hall last year, where I took the photo.

The report on the state of the Mercier bridge is due sometime today. Meantime it’s already come out that the poor condition of some of the bridge’s key elements only came to light by chance.

Someone spotted a vehicle in the pond at Angrignon Park Monday morning and at this hour it’s still there. It remains a mystery whether anyone is in it.

I hope this isn’t just PR greenwashing: NAV Canada is going to adjust flight paths around the airport to reduce CO2 emissions over town.

    • Brad 09:37 on 2011/09/19 Permalink

Despite the first sentence of the article, it’s not about “reducing CO2 emissions over town,” which makes no sense because the impact of CO2 emissions is global not local (CO2 is mixed pretty uniformly in the atmosphere), but rather reducing CO2 emissions in general by taking a different flight path that requires less fuel. Airlines have been using strategies like flying at lower altitudes to save fuel (it takes more fuel to get a jet up to a high altitude than to a low altitude). The motivation is mainly cost-cutting, because fuel costs money, but it does reduce CO2 emissions as well and that’s a good thing.

    • Kate 13:08 on 2011/09/19 Permalink

      Thanks for the clarification.

    • Doobious 16:05 on 2011/09/21 Permalink

Interesting buncha maps at the Nav Canada website.

From what I can see they’re making only small changes to the flight paths. It just seems like a big deal when a government agency operating in Quebec goes to great lengths to publicize what they’re doing.

Scare piece in the Journal essentially says crystal meth is very rare in Montreal but it could become more popular and then it would be a problem. “Les ingrédients de base du cristal meth sont des produits chimiques.” Wikipedia.

Crystal meth is an extremely scary and dangerous drug. Any coverage that underscores the risks is good in my books.

We need to keep it off the streets, start with banning of menial addictions?

The Journal covers the issue of itinerants in the Village, although I’m not sure whether declaring war is a fair metaphor.

Gays have had a long history of being robbed, and even murdered by unscrupulous criminals, often by guys they picked up. Can’t blame them for trying to make things safer but where are they going to send the street kids, Westmount?

    • MB 10:58 on 2011/09/19 Permalink

You must have meant “people” instead of “gays.” Unscrupulous criminals are less discriminatory than you think.

    • People person 11:15 on 2011/09/19 Permalink

Well the unscrupulous criminals I was talking about are guys that gain the trust of the gay men by pretending they are willing to have sex with them and then just steal their stuff. I think it’s sorta common.
