More money is to be allotted in financing for Bixi so it can expand; the city promises more bike paths as well.

i do not understand why the proposed bike path has a gap of a few blocks on laurier, west of papineau (which i traverse daily), the street seems to be large enough, even with enlarged sidewalks. i really hope that they at least put up a sign to permit bicycles to go against traffic, as permitted in the highway code since 1.1.2011, the street is calm enough.

in the plan there is a loop to go south on garnier, then gilford and then go back up to rejoin masson, but when will they see that cyclists rarely take big detours in reality.

New groups are demanding a change in the city’s approach to animal control and in response the city’s going to announce a broader policy on animals – although not necessarily the main change being demanded, which is the dismissal of borough contracts with for-profit pound Berger Blanc and the creation of a replacement to be publicly funded.

What annoys me is that in all these new stories they never mention the root cause of the problem which is that, in Montreal, unlike most major North American cities, you can be refused an apartment if you have a cat or dog. Which is bs, because all the pets I’ve owned have been quieter and cleaner than some people I’ve had to live next to in apartment buildings.

Not sure where else you’ve been, but I understand from friends around the net than in fact in most of the U.S. and the rest of Canada it’s understood that if you expect to have animals you need to be an owner first. It’s a weird North American obsession with the idea that animals are a nuisance and cause damage; the only landlord I know personally here bans animals on his premises.

except mice, which seem to be excepted in many places :-) not sure if my lease permits animals, compost worms seem to be fine.
another difference is that dogs are in general not permitted into restaurants, as they are elsewhere (i.e. austria, unless stated otherwise)?

Dogs are pretty much not allowed inside shops, restaurants or anywhere else unless they’re guide dogs. I’ve seen exceptions made for those very tiny dogs some women like to carry around, but on the whole I’m glad that dogs aren’t going to be cocking a leg near anything I’m going to eat.

Where I live the landlady permits cats but not dogs. The building has occasionally had mice in autumn when they tend to come indoors, but I’ve never seen any, probably because I do have a cat. They have their uses.

I’ve had a few places that didn’t want to rent to a family turn us down “because of our cat”. Most places really just mean no dogs, which is fair since cats aren’t a nuisance to downstairs neighbours when they run, and tend not to bark and howl when left alone.

City police are acknowledging there’s some truth in the report on racial profiling published Wednesday by the human rights commission. Rima Elkouri thoughtfully analyzes the damage done when such a policy is allowed to run unchecked in a society.

An Italian café in the city’s northeast was torched for a second time and another condo project under construction was also set on fire, both late Wednesday night.

You may soon be fined for street brawling as a thing in itself if the city passes a by-law it has in mind.

As an Irishman this is truly a disaster, when will the profiling end…..sorry I couldn’t help it.

The Mirror’s Best of Montreal results are up, and this blog is at least still on the list. It never occurred to me to get people to vote for this blog under the Twitter feed category as well. There’s always next year!

A report on the embourgeoisement of Masson Street as people who bought into the houses and condos in the Angus yards want to be able to buy nicer stuff.

Four hundred federal millions are going into bridge and autoroute repairs in the Montreal area over the next five years, bridges in particular needing maintenance.

Although there is an overall benefit to all of society for such repairs, they benefit mainly motorists. I’d would be fun to compare this number with how much is spent on pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.
