I did not mean to say anything offensive. It was merely an indirect way of noting that there was a demo but nothing particular to report about it.

Irritated with the yearly closing of the bike and footpath on Jacques-Cartier bridge, a cyclists’ group is planning a shovel-in tomorrow morning and is inviting people to show up and pitch in to help clear the path. Not sure what happens with the official barriers.

collectifvelo365 says on their website that the fence has disappeared (with photo).
another big irritation is that the ‘reseau blanc’ in the plateau is not cleared.
if we want to enable people to switch to cycling in the winter as well, an environment must be created so that they feel secure and can ride with dignity to arrive at their destination: this includes properly cleaned and separated bike lanes.
it is actually not really more unsafe to cycle in the winter, according to two polls that i’ve seen asking for accidents related to winter conditions. those are usually of the slipping kind where you don’t get hurt and pay more attention afterwards. in generally, one rides slower, adapting to road conditions which can change frequently.
cycling in the winter is just like any other sport: it requires the right equipment and then it can be great fun. you’ll be warmer than waiting for the bus too!
look here at the Defi Velo Blanc for some discussion about it:

related news: it seems that the critical mass taking place tonight (http://massecritiquemtl.org/) will feature some disguised cyclists to lighten up the spirits of the drivers being stuck in traffic.

Thanks for the news on the barrier, Stefan. Obviously I didn’t take the time to read the Collectif Velo site properly. Also for the note on Critical Mass.

A rally is planned this afternoon in support of the recent popular uprising in Egypt, really the only news story today. It’s at the Egyptian consulate, 1000 de la Gauchetière W., from 2 till 5.
Meanwhile, Canada has revoked the residency of relatives of the recently deposed Tunisian leader.

A coroner has concluded that persistent bedbugs pushed a woman to suicide in 2009.

And why on Earth would anyone expect otherwise?
