London’s just now opening its Bixi system to unsubscribed users and Minneapolis just got going with bright green Bixis, as Montreal regretfully puts its Bixis into hibernation. Meanwhile, Google is now including cycling directions for some Canadian cities on its maps, although not Montreal yet.

As of yesterday, google maps has the option for Montréal as well.

    • Kate 13:11 on 2010/12/03 Permalink

Aha! We weren’t mentioned in that CBC piece but I see the bicycle logo has arrived. Thanks!

The STM has a poll where you can vote for the appearance of the new metro trains among three options that many folks are likely to find pretty indistinguishable.

    • Carlos 23:07 on 2010/12/02 Permalink

Which one did you vote for? I vote for #2, the other ones had too much white. As long as there are not as ugly as the opus cards.

    • Kate 23:14 on 2010/12/02 Permalink

I voted for #1 because it has the most continuity with the present design. #2 has that >> logo on the roof, and by 2014 it may no longer be in use. #3 has two blue tones that are not different enough to be interesting.

    • Marc 00:16 on 2010/12/03 Permalink

      #2 was my choice

    • brad woodfin 16:27 on 2010/12/03 Permalink

#2. I hate color gradation and the blue in option 3 seems all wrong. Even if the arrows become outdated, they are on the roof, a part of the train that is not seen as much. The arrows may also become more of a design detail and less a reminder of this era of the STM. #2.

Interesting look at a new book on the history of Ste-Catherine Street by a UQÀM professor. There’s also a new show at the Pointe-à-Callière museum about the street.

I browsed the english version of the book the other day. The translation is horrible.

    • Kate 13:15 on 2010/12/03 Permalink

I didn’t realize the book was already out in translation.

They’ve got ’em at Indigo. Save your money for the awesome $2.15 grilled cheese sandwiches at the cafe instead.

The Grande Guignolée des médias is taking place today – that Radio-Canada piece has enough audio and video links to explain what it’s about.

In an unintended bit of low comedy, an arsonist who set fire to a pharmacy on Park Avenue last night also managed to ignite his own clothing. I suppose in a case like this the police inquire around the emergency departments…

Almost forgot to note the 9th anniversary of this blog. Next year there should be truffles and champagne, or at least noisemakers and beer.
