Some birds have died and some are being treated for damage sustained after the ship fuel leak into the Seaway.

Now the media are claiming that the Pamela Anderson thing is banned in Canada, which is simply ridiculous. I’m beginning to suspect that some PR outfit is spinning this into news.

Would City Hall have endorsed PETA anyway, regardless of the visual content of the ad?

Reminds me of the time in 2003 during the big blackout when some news person in NYC said that the power was out in New York, Maine, New Hampsire, New Jersey, Michigan, Ohio, AND CANADA. By that you’d have to think that all of Canada was in the dark.

Today is car-free Saint-Viateur – at least till 6 p.m. – and of course it’s also the big street fair along Ste-Catherine all weekend.

Later note: Also a big thunderstorm with intermittent torrential downpours. Whee!

A coroner’s report is still pending on the accident a year ago in which a slab of masonry fell off a Peel Street building and killed a woman sitting below. New rules on building maintenance which were expected as a result of the accident are also, therefore, still pending.

Many of Quebec’s lakes and rivers are in record low water after one of the hottest, driest seasons we’ve experienced.

Now that Juste pour rire has moved its street fair to the Quartier des spectacles, the crowds are missed by businesses around the Quartier latin.

I was walking around the Just for Laughs yesterday and thought it felt quite odd… I think the narrowness of Saint-Denis and the beautiful faux-mansard roofs created a really nice frame for the JfL activities.

The openness of the Quartier des Spectacles doesn’t seem to work so well when there are lots of little roving shows and activities moving around.

It used to be that part of enjoying the festival season here was all these little side trips into neighborhoods you might not normally spend that much time in. Having all the festive eggs in one basket will hurt some places for sure.

When the Jazz Fest first started it was just basically on Saint Dennis street with some small stages here and there. People in the neighborhood complained loudly about noise and the partying in Saint Louis Square. The Jazz fest needs a large place but I don’t think having everything there is the way to go. And after many years of loving it the “aluminum” ownership leaves a sad taste in my mouth. Corporate ownership of everything is ensured by the Quartier des Spectacles.

The Villanueva inquest continues, with testimony from various witnesses who happened to be nearby during the incident. It’s turning into a kind of Seven Samurai story.
