The Journal de Montréal has fired nine of its locked-out workers and a number of others have received suspensions from a week to an entire year to be served after their employment resumes. They’re letting Fabrice de Pierrebourg go – brilliant move there, getting rid of the guy who first cracked the whole Benoit Labonté-Tony Accurso thing.

Tangential train of thought: a media outlet like Rue Frontenac, how does it work if somebody’s not doing their job properly? You can’t exactly fire them as you might from a regular business.

They’ve been doing it for a little while now but does anyone know why the Gazette has finally realized that the STM is actually called the STM rather than the MTA or MTC or whatever English name that they had made up/carried over from the 60s for so long?

I think that comment belongs on the post below this one. But I don’t know the answer – Fagstein? Anyone?

The STM has decided to start over from scratch and launch a new tender for the replacement of its aging fleet of metro cars. The delivery date has been delayed, inevitably, and no champagne corks are popping at Bombardier.

I still don’t see why the STM can’t distribute the construction among more than one engineering firm, to speed things up a bit – but maybe that’s asking for trouble?

Details on a scam at city hall are gradually coming to light with a civil lawsuit brought by a contractor. It’s a complicated, devious little story.

The Quartier des Spectacles has given notice that the fountains on the Place are not a wading pool and note that the water’s recycled and not necessarily safe to play in. But if you have water splashing around at ground level on a hot day, it’s clearly an invitation. What else could they expect?

A serious oil spill from a damaged freighter has closed the St. Lawrence Seaway. The ship can carry 200 tons of fuel; the leak has been stopped, but the spill has covered a considerable area.

After his arrest and bail from the G20 protests in Toronto, Jaggi Singh finds himself under heavy manners including a bizarre proscription against using cell phones – and, of course, he can’t participate in any demonstrations either. Whatever one thinks of Singh, he is not a criminal, and I see nothing in these articles suggesting he ought to be robbed of his freedom of speech.

from the Wikipedia article on Jaggi Singh:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaggi_Singh
In November 2005, the UN body’s report singled out Montreal police for the disproporionate use of mass arrests, stating: “The State party should ensure that the right of persons to peacefully participate in social protests is respected, and ensure that only those committing criminal offences during demonstrations are arrested … The Committee also invites the State party to conduct an inquiry into the practices of the Montreal police forces during demonstrations, and wishes to receive more detail about the practical implementation of article 63 of the Criminal Code relating to unlawful assembly.”[28] Singh cited the results of the report as a vindication for Montreal activists: “The report validates what protesters have been saying about these protests, that these mass arrests are essentially a tactic by Montreal police to prevent by fear the involvement of young people who take to the streets in protest.”

      plus ca change…

It seems likely the citizens of Milton Parc will lose their small alley park they’ve fought for for two decades.
