Richard Bergeron says that the mayor is fudging the seriousness of the air quality issue in handwaving the construction of autoroute 19 and other highway projects that will increase traffic flow onto the island.

Firemen have to participate in an ongoing door-to-door exercise to ensure that nobody’s going to die alone in an un-air-conditioned place. The city has a list of refuges from the heat (PDF file) which may be useful – note that they’re for seniors, those with chronic diseases and those living alone who do not have air conditioning although I don’t know how they verify that last one. The heat wave already has taken seven possible victims although I suspect the poor quality of the air has more to do with this than the actual temperature.

Stabbing today at Aux Derniers Humains on Saint-Denis, and one of the three victims was seriously injured with a stab wound to the chest. This is a low-key, pleasantly bohemian café that doesn’t suggest the sort of gang-oriented spot prone to that kind of trouble.
Metro has a CP piece saying the stabbing was in Villeray. You know, time was that one of the key items in your city room (does anyone have city rooms any more?) was a map of the city, with things like borough and neighbourhood boundaries marked. The corner of Bélanger and Saint-Denis is in Petite-Patrie. Nothing south of Jean-Talon is in Villeray. I realize that since the borough system, and with arbitrarily smashed together boroughs like Villeray-Saint-Michel-Park-Extension, it can be confusing, but if you’re covering the city it does rather behoove you to know where its neighbourhoods are. (Never mind putting Christophe-Colomb in Park Ex, like the Gazette did recently.)
Plus, CBC calls the café “Aux Dernier Humains”, Rue Frontenac “Les Derniers Humains” and the Gazette “Au Derniers Humains”. Anyone need a good copyeditor?
Later note: CP has fixed its location. Bravo!

The city has to cut costs to tackle its deficit with plans to reduce management positions and freeze its budget at the same level for 2011.
