The expulsion from a francisation class of a woman wearing a face-concealing niqab has put a cat among the accommodation pigeons: the story suggests she asked for various rearrangements of the class for her comfort, but also that she had been asked to remove the face covering so that people could interact with her in what our culture tends to regard as the normal way, i.e. seeing each other’s facial expressions. This won’t be an easy one to resolve. She’s taking it to the Human Rights Commission.
