Kristian at Coolopolis has discovered a wonderful 1889 book called Montreal By Gaslight (available online at archive.org, although somebody needs to give that microfiche text a good proofreading).

Bizarre story of very minimal snow removal in Anjou; southwesterners have their eye on a greenway linking up various hectares of greenery through their zone (that’s a Facebook link, but openly accessible); Petite Patrie now has a website with notices of neighbourhood meeting plans; the Quartier des spectacles on Twitter announces a zippy Youtube video about the Nuit Blanche; Plateau Mont-Royal council meeting live on the web at this moment (your results may vary depending on your internet speed).

Without a contract since 2006, the city’s firemen now have an arbitrated deal giving them a total 4% retroactive raise plus 2.8% for 2010. They wanted more, but the city has pleaded its budgetary limits and plans to use this deal as a guideline for new contracts with other major city unions.

As retweeted earlier, the STM is finally going to be using Twitter as of March 10 to announce any metro service interruptions expected to last longer than 20 minutes.
I can’t help picturing that, after clicking the bit.ly link, you’ll get an audio file that goes Avis à tous les voyageurs, mmfh rfm frbt mnfrmrm frnbbl bltz just like in the metro itself.

The STM got a formal bid today from the Chinese train company that wants to convert the metro to steel wheels. Construcciones y auxiliar de ferrocarriles of Spain also got a bid in under the wire.

Events open to the public for Fashion Week – Metro has a whole mini-dossier on the week; La Presse also has a blogger on the beat.

Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital has not only had a massive emergency ward crisis lately but has also been fighting a long battle against C. difficile and its overworked nurses are burning out from too much overtime.
Not only that, the city’s emergency wards in general have been overcrowded to the point of danger for patients.
Mostly I don’t blog these stories because the solution has to come from Quebec, not from the city, but the sheer size of Montreal means this kind of problem becomes most acute here.

Just retweeting (so to speak) Spacing’s announcement of a meeting about greening the Plateau.

Bronwyn Chester on the loss of the hemlock tree in local forests.

Le Devoir has discovered that the SHDM omitted the little detail of calling for tenders for doing something with the northern part of the Îlot Balmoral because City Hall has been so keen to start work in the area, considered part of the Quartier des spectacles.
