There is really only one news story this week, the Haiti earthquake. Fagstein has made an excellent list of the benefits and fundraisers planned around town and the CBC’s got a good Haiti Relief page. I donated to Médecins sans frontières because they are already there providing crucial services and have no religious agenda, as many charities do.
Stories with local angles: a Montreal man, Guillaume Siemienski, working in Haiti for CIDA, is confirmed dead, as is another CIDA worker, Hélène Rivard; another 1,415 Canadians are considered missing; Canadians are relieved to be repatriated as military aircraft landed at Trudeau yesterday and today, all with harrowing stories and some immediately transported to hospital; Dany Laferrière, back in town, was interviewed about his experience.
Rima Elkouri notes the pertinence of Twitter as an instant and immediate news source from the ground and Marie-Claude Lortie notes the many threads that link Haiti and Quebec.
