The 15-year-old who pleaded guilty in the death of Kim Ngu Lieu has been given a 33-month sentence in a youth centre. The photo of the victim, which I haven’t seen before, shows someone who hardly looks her 67 years; her son thinks the sentence is not harsh enough.

The city’s boroughs must tighten their belts and cut $40 million from their budgets – that’s to say, reduce them by 40% for three years. That’s a lot, and it sounds like many plans and projects will have to be given up or postponed for the duration.

The STM is being very definite that the bid attempt from Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive to make new metro cars is too late, although the Gazette is giving some room to the firm’s arguments.

The helicopter pilot from this morning’s crash was given props for bringing the thing down with no fatalities in the midst of an urban jungle near the Bonaventure autoroute. At least he cannot be blamed for the massive pothole that appeared on the autoroute, because that turned up yesterday.

Spacing ponders some dicta today from Plateau mayor Luc Ferrandez. He’s stated on his blog that the city should limit access to the eastern lookout on Mount Royal and I tend to agree with the Spacing writer that while there may be an argument, it would be a shame – if you had a vehicle – not to be able to go there at night. It’s one of the things you show people.
There’s also the issue of the city considering selling the institutional buildings in Lafontaine park, labelled on this Google map as Université du Québec à Montréal, into private hands. I agree totally with Ferrandez that it would be a big mistake. The best thing to do with that bite out of the park would be to return it to green space, something the Plateau’s short of.

The city has struck a deal with the police fraternity so that the 120 “temporary” cops facing contract termination can keep their jobs.

The second TVA journalist has been extricated from the downed copter: both of the passengers are still alive, at least.

Time Magazine says that the bike path from Atwater Market out to Lachine’s Parc René-Lévesque is the third nicest urban bike path in the world. A reader tells me Time first reported on the bike path back in August.

The STM is resisting the sudden demand of a Chinese engineering firm that it be allowed to bid on the metro car contract, saying it’s too late and that its claim that the tender wasn’t widely enough publicized is false. It took a long time to arrive at the current Bombardier-Alstom consortium deal and the city’s just about to sign for billions of dollars worth of new rolling stock – but what if Zhouzhou Electric Locomotive could really cut the cost in half – ?

Union Montreal has rejected a Vision Montreal suggestion that snow removal be centralized and made uniform throughout all of Montreal. Mayor Tremblay has ordained that each borough makes its own decisions on the matter.

The city launched a snitch line and snitch website yesterday to encourage city employees and contractors to report on dodgy activities connected with city business. The number is 1 866 232-8803.

A helicopter belonging to the TVA network has gone down near the Bonaventure autoroute. Two people are said to be injured, one of whom is still trapped inside the downed copter.
