The people promoting Montreal's aspirations for an MLS soccer team say
it was the league that withdrew the bid, not them. In any case I don't think this needs to be seen as another big sports tragedy like losing the Grand Prix. The Impact are a good team but it will take time to build serious support here – not for the sport as such, because plenty of people are into supporting home-country teams when it comes time for the Euro or World Cup, but for the idea of going to the Saputo stadium for an Impact game. If tickets remain affordable because backers are not worried about paying many millions of dollars for a franchise, that will do more for the home team than a lot of expensive vapid glitz.
