I heard
this story on CBC radio yesterday: basically an undertaker wants the Quebec government to
fork over unclaimed inheritance money to pay for "decent burials" for the unclaimed dead. This organization claims it's reasonable to ask for "at least $2,500 each" for "dignity" – i.e. fancy coffins, unrequested religious services, and other mortuary froufrou – a price tag that only exists because the funeral industry has inflated it up to this level. I don't know what it actually costs to put a body in a plain pine box and bury it, but it's got to be less than a grand. What a scam.
