Bouchard-Taylor gabfest lands in Montreal
The Bouchard-Taylor commission's first excursion in Montreal found no shortage of people in Côte-des-Neiges willing to talk about their immigrant experience. Others came to demonstrate at the hearings, which will resume in Montreal next week. The Bouchard-Taylor hearings have also led the cardinal of Quebec, Marc Ouellet, to publish a public letter apologizing on behalf of the Roman Catholic church for its abuses of power – a letter cannily deconstructed by La Presse's Patrick Lagacé, who zeroed in immediately on the heart of the missive, which makes a plea for the return of religious education in public schools. Other responses have been mixed. One of the speakers in Côte-des-Neiges was quoted as saying that, no matter how long he's been here, he always gets asked where do you come from?. It probably wouldn't console him to know that so do I. |
